GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Abbey Tyson scored her fourth goal of the season in the 21st minute and the No. 10 Davenport women's soccer used an excellent defensive performance the rest of the way to hold on and beat Madonna 1-0 in the semifinal round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament on a chilly late afternoon at DU Turf Field. The Panthers, owners of a 17-2 record, host second-seed Northwestern Ohio Friday for the playoff crown. Kickoff is to be announced at a later date.
In addition to the 1-0 win, the Panthers set a new single-season record for shutouts with 13, breaking last year's record of 12.
Both teams had a fair share of possession throughout the first half but it was the Panthers who drew first blood. After Brenna Hartner cleared the ball from the Panthers territory, Lizzie Paul was able to get around a Crusader defender and prevent it from rolling the end line. Paul quickly found Thelma Gylfadottir in the goal box, who made a one-touch pass for Tyson to take a shot into the upper left corner in the 21st minute.
Davenport had several close opportunities to add on to its lead in the opening half. A little after Tyson's goal, Paul dribbled down the right flank and tried to connect to Letesha Cannonier on the left side of the goal box, but the ball sailed by the junior forward.
The Panthers went into the locker room outshooting the Crusaders 9-1 overall, 5-0 in goal. Eight different Panthers each recorded a shot with Tyson tallying two.
Madonna's best opportunity in the match came five minutes into the second half, when two Crusaders forced a two-on-one breakaway against Laken Duchar-Clark, but Mel Hyames arrived just in time to help the senior and goalkeeper Michelle Marcus clear the ball out of danger.
The Crusaders played aggressive all throughout the second half to try and break the Panthers defense. Madonna outshot the Panthers 6-3 in the latter period but Marcus was able to stop a pair of shots.
Post-Match Notes
Davenport improves to 8-5-2 against Madonna, having won six straight and gone unbeaten in the last nine meetings…The Panthers matched the program's single-season record of 17 wins set last season…
