HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey team looked to continue the offensive attack they used in the last game to carry over to this game. However, the Panthers were unable to use the offensive attack against crosstown rival Grand Valley State. The Lakers were able to score three goals in the first 15 minutes of the game to take an early lead and they never looked back as the hung to win 4-2. The Panthers will be in action against Grand Valley State again tomorrow at Patterson Ice Center for a 5:30 p.m. faceoff.
In the first period the Lakers jumped out to and early lead scoring 5:27 into the game to take the lead, and just 54 seconds later Grand Valley struck again to take the 2-0 lead. With five minutes left in the period the Lakers added their goal of the period to take a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers were able finally break through, as
Andrew Frank was able to find the back of the net on the power play as
Winston Hofer was able to drag the defender toward the center of the ice to open up the ice for Frank who was rifled it past the Laker net minder.
The second period was plagued with a lot of special teams play as both teams were sent to the box on numerous occasions. Both teams had the chance to score, but were unable too. The Lakers looked to increase their lead heading into the intermission, but hit the post twice in the closing minutes of the period.
Davenport looked to make a comeback in the third period and they started on the right note as
Cody Walsh blasted a shot from the point that was tipped in by
Stephen Flood to make it a one-goal game. The Panthers had few close chances, but the puck just missed wide on those chances.
With seven minutes remaining in the game the Lakers were able to hop on a loose puck and had a breakaway from the blue line and the Zac Strain was able to elevate the puck over
Matt Kaludis' pad to increase the lead back to two. The Lakers were able to hold onto the 4-2 victory.
After the game head coach
Phil Sweeney talked about his team performance, "Tonight we played inconsistent that has been the theme of the semester. We just have to play better all around. One good game a weekend is not good enough. We have to play our best game of the semester tomorrow and tomorrow is a playoff game for us. We have to play the best 60 minutes of hockey we have all year."
The Panthers will close out the semester on Saturday against Grand Valley State at Patterson Ice Center at 5:30 p.m. in game two of the Crosstown Clash.
