DEARBORN, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey team looked to continue their four game winning against conference foe Michigan-Dearborn. However, the Panthers were unable to increase their winning streak as the Wolverines scored two early goals in the first period. DU made a valiant comeback but they were unable to complete the comeback as they fell to the Wolverines 4-3. Davenport will be back on the ice Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. against Michigan-Dearborn to finish off the weekend series at Patterson Ice Center.
The first opened with the Panthers getting early scoring chances and getting to the net early, but they were unable to capitalize on the chance. DU had two power play chances including a two man advantage, but the Wolverines capitalized as they scored a short handed goal to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines continued the high level of special teams play as they scored on their only power play opportunity of the period to take a 2-0 lead. After Michigan-Dearborn scored the two goals the Panthers held the puck in the Wolverine zone, but they were unable to cut the deficit as the Panthers hit the post three times in the span of a minutes as the Wolverines held a 2-0 lead after the first period.
In the second stanza DU came out fast looking to tie the game, and they did just that as
Andrew Frank started the scoring with 12 minutes left in the period as he was able to snipe the puck past the Wolverine net minder to cut the lead in half. A few minutes late
Kevin Noble blasted the puck from the point and it was able to trickle into the net.
In the last portion of the period Michigan-Dearborn capitalized on a two-man advantage to take the lead once again. With under a minute left the
Stephen Flood was tripped on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot, but unlike the game against Liberty, Flood was not able to convert as the Wolverines carried a 3-2 lead in to the second intermission.
The Wolverines came out quick in the third period as they scored less than three minutes into the period to increase their lead to two goals.
Mason Bohlinger came back quickly to score a goal on an assist from Frank and
Bo Jacobs to make it a 4-3 game with 16 minutes left in the game.
The Panthers had a few power play chances including a 5-on-3, but they were unable to tally any goals as they fell to Michigan-Dearborn 4-3.
After the game head coach
Phil Sweeney said, "We started the game too loose, and it cost us as we were down two and had to dig out of a hole. It is tough to beat a team four times in one semester and to their credit they capitalized on their opportunities. We did not finish on the numerous chances that we had, a lot of them were quality chances. If we have those kind of chances all season I will be happy because we will win a lot of games. We were in the right position a lot tonight, and usually that ends up with us getting the win. We will be better tomorrow and I completely expect us to bounce back with one of our better performances of the season.
The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow as they face-off against Michigan-Dearborn to conclude the weekend series at Patterson Ice Center with the puck drop scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
