Women's Lacrosse 2013 Preview: Coaching Staff

Game Notes | 2013 Roster | 2013 Schedule

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's lacrosse team is less than 48 hours away from starting its newest season in Georgia and North and South Carolina, starting at the Savannah College of Art & Design Sunday at noon, followed by Young Harris Feb. 26, at North Carolina Wesleyan Feb. 28 and at Chowan March 1. After introducing to the offense on Tuesday and the defense on Thursday, the final edition of the three-piece preview will feature the coaching staff.

After guiding her Panthers to a 10-9 record in her rookie season, head coach Celeste Shefferly is still continuing to lay the foundation of the program. But she does see the progress made after one season.

“I think people are starting to notice us more, especially in the (Grand Rapids) area,” Shefferly said. “In general, we are here not to just have fun, but we are here to win. The ladies on my team want to win and they want to get better so they can continue to win.”

With her first head coaching season under her belt, Shefferly said she will be taking the next step to leading her players to national prominence. To do that, she said she will be making some adjustments to her coaching style.

“I think we can start doing more complex stuff and just in general get deeper into the lacrosse strategy, because we have ladies that have the stick skills to back it up,” Shefferly said. “We don't have to worry about the basics as much as we did before.”

To help her with that next step, Shefferly has added an All-American to her staff as Hannah Brogger transitions from an outstanding playing career at Aquinas to a coaching career with Davenport. In her final season with the Saints last year, Brogger led the National Women's Lacrosse League in every main offensive category, scoring 100 goals, notching 38 points for 138 points.

Shefferly said Brogger has been excellent in her first collegiate coaching season.

“She has helped with every aspect of it,” Shefferly said. “She brings so much knowledge and experience behind her playing at Aquinas and winning All-American honors. I know she is specialized in attacking towards the end of her career, but she played midfield as well and she knows pretty much the entire game.”
