HENDERSON, Tenn. –
Ashleigh Blovsky provided a huge three-run homerun in game one and the team followed with a big first inning in game two to post a 3-0, 5-1 sweep of host Freed Hardeman on Friday evening. The pair of wins lifts Davenport to 12-5-1 on the season as they will remain in Tennessee this weekend as they will face Martin Methodist on Sunday in a double header against the Red Hawks.
The Davenport softball team had a flare for the dramatics on Friday as they had all of their scoring in just two innings in a sweep of the host Lions. The meetings were the first ever against Freed Hardeman as DU has now won nine of its past 10 games.
Game 1 – W, 3-0
Sam Cole was brilliant on the mound to pick up her eighth win of the season as the senior went the distance to post her second shutout of the season. Cole finished with a line of 7.0IP, 4H and just 2BB. Most of the game was a pitchers' duel between Sarah Cousar and Cole but the Panthers broke through in the sixth.
Melissa Covert led off with a walk and was moved over to send on a sacrifice bunt by
Amber Getty.
Sarah Schneidenbach then followed with a single to give DU runner's on the corners and after a fly out from
KC Dunne, sophomore
Ashleigh Blovsky belted a three-run homerun to centerfield to put DU on top.
Cole shut down the Lions in the last two frames to get the win as the team handed the Lions starter, Cousar, just her second loss of the young season
Game 2 – W, 5-1
Using the momentum from the exciting finish to the first game, DU wasted little time grabbing a lead as they brought across five runs in the opening inning. Although all the runs were un-earned via some errors by the home team, DU got the big hit from freshman
Carli SanMillan when she singled down the right field line and the hit brought home
Debra Burton and
Paige Sant'Angelo and then Carli scored after an error. Burton also picked up an RBI in the inning.
The lead was more than enough for freshman
Kyleigh Linebaugh who improved to 3-2 on the season by going all seven innings allowing just one run on six hits and striking out three. Linebaugh retired the side in the seventh as DU finished with the two-game sweep of the Lions on their home field.
Davenport will return to action in Pulaski, Tenn. on Sunday when they face Martin Methodist.
Post-Game Quotes – Associate Head Coach McCall Salmon
“Our defense and pitching staff did an excellent job tonight. Both made big plays throughout each game that eliminated FHU from getting into any offensive rhythm.”
