SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The 2013 Davenport Volleyball season begins on Tuesday in what proves to be a grueling but memorable week out in California. The Lady Panthers, who come into the season picked second by the league raters, are fresh off a 32-7 campaign that saw them qualify for the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history. Davenport will play Westmont, who finished last season No. 16 in the national poll, on Tuesday before heading to Biola University near Anaheim to play four matches in two days including the defending national champions from Concorda-Irvine.
Grueling Opening Week Schedule
Other than Westmont, who finished the season ranked No. 16 in the national poll, Davenport will also face Concordia (last year's national champions and No. 1 ranked team), The Masters (No. 11), Cal State San Marcos (No. 18) and Vanguard (#RV). The Lady Panthers finished the 2012 campaign receiving votes as well and the tournament hosted by Biola is always one of the toughest in the country.
A Quick Look at Westmont (Calif.)
Westmont comes into the 2013 campaign with high hopes as they finished last season ranked No. 11 in the coaches poll. The Warriors, under third year head coach Patti Cook will turn to returning NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Ciara Turner. The middle hitter was named All-GSAC and posted a team high .357 hitting percentage while recording 346 kills. It will be the first ever matchup between the two schools and also the first of the year for each.
Biola Summer Slam
One of the most prestigious tournaments in the country gets the 2013 season off on a high note as Biola University hosts their annual Summer Slam featuring 12 schools from all across America. Nine of the 12 teams finished the 2012 campaign ranked inside the Top-25 or receiving votes. Play starts at Noon EST on Thursday and it runs through Friday with the final matches being played at 10 p.m. EST
