Olivia DenHartigh led the team on the offensive side of the net as the freshman finished with 15 kills in her first collegiate match. Junior Amber Getty posted a double-double with 34 assists and 19 digs, both of which led the Panthers.
In the first match for both teams, the play early on was back and forth until the host Warriors took control of the opening set and forced coach Megan Lenhart into a timeout with DU trailing 16-10. The Panthers rallied to get back within three at 22-19 but a service error was followed by two more points by WC and Westmont took the opener 25-19.
Davenport quickly forgot the opening loss as they jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the second and upped their lead to as many as seven. Westmont hung tough however and got within a single point at 20-19 but a kill stopped the run and DU closed out the Warriors 25-21 to even the match at a set a piece
The strong start continued for DU in the third as they posted eight out of the first 10 points to force WC into a timeout and eventually upped the lead to 13-3. The margin grew to as many as 11 before the Panthers closed it out 25-18 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Looking to close out the match in four, Davenport fell behind 10-9 early and the Warriors actually increased it to 16-12 before DU rallied to tie it with a four point run behind the strong serving of Amber Getty but the comeback fell short as WC ran away with the 25-20 win.
Westmont too control of the fifth set early and extended its lead to as many as five at 11-6. DU got back to within two on a pair of occasions but a total of seven hitting errors and one service error doomed the Panthers as the Warriors escaped with a 15-11 victory to take the match 3-2.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday and Friday at the Biola University Summer Slam. DU will open play at 2 p.m. EST against Vanguard University who like DU is coming into the tournament receiving votes in the national poll.
