GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was a big night for freshman Shameeka Fishley and the No. 21 Davenport women's soccer team. In her collegiate debut, Fishley scored not once, not twice, but three times to help the Panthers upset third-ranked Spring Arbor University 4-0 in both schools' season opener Wednesday night.
Letesha Cannonier, who like Fishley hails from Leeds, England, scored Davenport's second goal of the night and assisted Fishley's second goal.
Both teams traded off offensive opportunities but solid defending kept the match scoreless heading into intermission. DU's best chance came with approximately 30 minutes left. Lizzie Paul's free kick from midfield found Laken Duchar-Clark inside a crowded penalty box. The senior's two-touch shot was blocked by Cougar keeper Sarah Yancer and just as the Cougars cleared the ball, Natalie McHale took a shot but was wide.
Davenport held a 5-4 edge in shots but didn't have a corner kick opportunity in the period.
The Panthers broke the ice with 24:08 when the Cougars thought they cleared a corner kick but Fishley picked up the loose ball and forced a one-on-one matchup with Yancer. Yancer made a charge but Fishley beat her as her shot rolled into the back of the net.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute when Cannonier beat Yancer one-on-one in the penalty area.
About four minutes later, Cannonier and Fishley traded off headers in the box but it was Fishley who put the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the night.
Fishley would put the match out of the Cougars reach in the 85th minute when her shot from 20 yards arched over the keeper and into the net.
Post-Match Notes
The Panthers victory over the No. 3 Cougars was the highest ranking in program history, besting the 2012 team's 2-1 come-from-behind overtime victory over No. 11 Martin Methodist College...The Panthers win the inaugural meeting against the Cougars...Shameeka Fishley becomes the sixth student-athlete in program history to record a hat trick, the last was Lizzie Paul against Aquinas in the first meeting last season...As being the winning goalkeeper, Michelle Marcus has tied Catherine Howard (2009-12) for the most victories in program history.
