LA MIRADA, Calif. – Day two of the Biola Summer Slam saw the competition get even tougher and Davenport again posted a 1-1 day to finish 2-2 in the tournament. The Panthers took the opening set from No. 1 Concordia (Irvine) but fell in four before finishing off No. 20 Cal State San Marcos in a thrilling 5-set match. DU leaves California with an overall record of 2-3 as they now head back to the Midwest where they will face No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan next Friday.

In their first ever meeting with a team ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, Davenport fell behind 4-0 quickly but a 7-2 run gave DU their first lead and they would hold it for the remainder of the set. The Panthers led by as many as five (20-15) and finished off the Eagles 25-21. It marked the first set the defending national champions had dropped this season.

Concordia, who was riding a 40-match winning streak coming into the day, came back strong however and evened the match with a 25-18 win in the second. The Eagles continued their winning ways in the third with a commanding 25-13 win and then closed DU out with a 25-17 win in the fourth. Leading the way offensively for the Panthers was Hannah Stone who posted a team high 10 kills while Sidney Rodriguez was outstanding in the back row finishing with 17 digs.

The second match of the day saw yet another Top-25 program as No. 20 Cal State San Marcos brought a 4-1 mark into the afternoon session. DU started strong in the opener taking it 25-15 but then struggled early and often in the second as the Cougars tied it up with a 25-16 win. The two teams traded the next two sets with DU winning the third 25-21 and CSUSM winning the fourth 25-16 to set up a fifth and deciding set.

In their third match to go 5-sets already on the young season, DU got out to a fast lead at 8-4 and hung on to win 16-14 in dramatic fashion. Marcey DeHaan led the Panthers with 15 kills while Amber Getty posted 42 assists and 12 digs for her second double-double of the season. Sidney Rodriguez posted a season high 24 digs in the win

Davenport will continue their tough early season schedule next Friday, August 30 when they play at No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan. DU will face the host Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. before taking on Texas Wesleyan at 8 p.m.
