UPLAND, Ind. – A tough early season schedule continued for the volleyball team on Saturday but the Panthers were up to the task as they defeated host Taylor University (3-0) and Marian University (3-1) to finish 3-1 in the Taylor/Indiana Wesleyan Crossover. Davenport will bring a 5-4 overall record into their next appearance at Madonna University next Friday and Saturday in the Julie Martin Memorial Tournament. DU will face four opponents over the two days beginning with Rochester College (Mich.) at 5:30 p.m. on September 6.
In the opener against host Taylor University, the Panthers picked up their first win in program history over the Trojans and they did it in straight sets, 25-20, 25-15, 25-21. Head coach Megan Lenhart, who was an assistant coach for TU from 2005-2007, led her team to a rebound victory after falling in the nightcap last night to Texas Wesleyan and the team evened their record at 4-4.
Offensively, senior Nicole Chase and junior Hannah Stone dominated the middle as they each finished with 10 kills while junior Amber Getty dished out 40 assists and freshman Maddy Cassleman was tops with 10 digs. DU hit .255 as a team compared to just .097 for the Trojans
In the afternoon match, Davenport recovered after a slow start to finish with a bang as they overcame a 25-20 loss in the opener to defeat Marian 25-19, 25-18, 25-19. Hannah Stone had a standout match as the junior finished with 12 kills on just 19 attempts and also added a pair of solo blocks and four assist blocks.
The team continued their consistent offensive flow as they posted a .273 hitting percentage while the defense was on top of its game too highlighted by a team high 25 digs from sophomore Sidney Rodriguez.
Davenport, winners of five of its last seven matches, will be in action next Friday when they travel to Livonia to take part in the Julie Martin Memorial Tournament hosted by Madonna University. The Panthers begin play Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Rochester College.
