GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport Volleyball team will finally come home to the DU Student Center next week and it comes on the heels of a 3-1 weekend at the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene. The Panthers fell to No. 17 Viterbo (Wis.) 3-1 in the NAIA Match of the Week but rebounded to post an important 3-2 victory over fellow receiving votes team Saint Ambrose in the afternoon match. DU (13-6) will play their first home match of the season on Wednesday when they host UM-Dearborn at 7 p.m.
The morning match was one of the biggest across the country on Saturday and the NAIA selected it as its match of the week but the V-Hawks were too much for the Panthers pulling out a very close 4-set match 22-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-23. Davenport held leads late in sets three and four but Viterbo closed strong to post the win.
As a team, Davenport hit just .151 as they were led by 14 kills from Olivia DenHartigh and got 13 from Marcey DeHaan.
Looking to rebound and finish their weekend strong, Davenport got off to a solid start against Saint Ambrose, who like the Panthers, entered the week receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll. DU took the opening set 25-17 but then fell behind with 25-22 and 25-21 losses in the next two.
DU stayed together and put a 25-14 win on the board in the fourth and closed out the Vikings with a 15-11 win in the fifth. DenHartigh, on her way to being named to the All-Tournament Team, posted a career high 20 kills to go along with another career high of 16 digs. The DU defense was anchored by three players finishing with double-digit kills as Sidney Rodriguez (27) and Lexie Spetoskey (20) joined DenHartigh.
Davenport will play their first home match of the season on Wednesday when they welcome in the Wolverines of UM-Dearborn for a 7 p.m. opening serve.
Post-Match Notes
Davenport is now 4-4 this season against teams inside the Top-25 or receiving votes…The next four matches for the Panthers will all be against WHAC opponents…Olivia DenHartigh finished the weekend with combined 58 kills, 28 digs and 2.0 blocks
