GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In front of a good crowd on hand Saturday night at DU Turf Field, the Davenport women's rugby team put together quite a show in their very first match as a program as
Danielle Ordway recorded the first try in 4:20 to help the Panthers post a 72-0 victory over Calvin.
After Ordway ran the distance to record the first points in program history,
Hannah Tennant would go on to add more by making the first conversion. The Panthers continued their hot start by scoring four more tries in the span of ten minutes. The defense stifled Calvin as they kept them scoreless all throughout the first half. In the final play of the first half, Davenport scored a try to take a 46-0 lead into intermission.
The Panther offense continued straight away scoring five minutes into the second half. The Panther defense dominated the Knights throughout the period stopping Calvin on the goal line several times to preserve the shutout. Head coach
Greg Teliczan's squad put up three more tires in the second half to secure the victory.
Gabby Florez led the Panthers by scoring four tries to total 20 of the 72 points. Tennant went 3-for-8 on conversions to start the game.
Brittany O'Dell would take over the kicking duties for Tennant and only missed one of her four attempts as well as adding two tries to chip in 16 points for the Panthers.
The Panthers held a balanced attack throughout the game with eight different players putting points on the board for them.
Davenport will test their skills away from their pitch Friday as it travels to Big Rapids, Mich., to take on Ferris State at 7 p.m.
