Five Power Play Goals Leads D2 Hockey to Comeback Win over Utah

MENTOR, Ohio – The Davenport D2 hockey team closed out their toughest stretch of the season on Sunday playing their fourth game in three days. The Panthers fell behind early trailing by as many as three goals in the game, but the power play was on fire with five goals to fuel the team to an 8-4 come from behind win over Utah. Davenport will be back in action next weekend with a home-and-home series against Ferris State.
 
To start the game Utah jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Davenport, 12 minutes into the first period. In the Panthers fourth game in three days, the Utes took advantage of early opportunities and took a 4-1 lead over DU with three minutes left in the first period. Zachary Bodziak tallied the first goal of the game for DU, and Daniel Swink put a one timer past the Utah net minder to cut the deficit to two goals heading into the first intermission.
 
The Davenport offense came alive in the second period as Chris McRae continued where he left off from the games the previous day and scored a power play goal. Donald Sund then followed up with a power play goal of his own to tie the game at four goals apiece. Jake Otto closed out the scoring for DU in the second period to give the Panthers a 5-4 lead after two periods. Davenport took their first lead of the game a battled back from a three-goal deficit.
 
In the third period, the Davenport offense did not let up as the Sund tallied another power play goal for the Panthers to increase the Davenport lead to two goals. McRae continued to keep the power play unit hot with his second goal of the game. Otto capped off the scoring in the game with his second goal of the game to give DU an 8-4 win over Utah. Andrew Habasevich made his first start of the season and picked up the win.
 
The Panthers will be back on the ice with a home-and-home series against Ferris State starting on Friday in Big Rapids, Mich. at 9:30 p.m., followed by Davenport's home opener on Saturday at Patterson Ice Center at 4:50 p.m.
