GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's basketball team lost their first game of the season on Monday night against Jamestown (N.D.). The Jimmies hit a last second three point to seal the 80-79 win over the Panthers.
Dominez Burnett and
Kevin Rich each had 23 points in the game as DU is now 7-1 on the year. The Panthers will have to rebound quickly as they face Indiana Tech on Tuesday night at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the DU Student Center.
Kevin Rich tied his career high with 23 points in the game and grabbed seven rebounds to go along with five assists to lead the team. After a quite first half,
Dominez Burnett had 17 points in the second half, to finish the game with 23 points.
Davenport started the game on roll as they jumped out to 15-6 lead with 12:23 left in the first half. The Jimmies went on a 13-0 run to take a 19-15 over the Panthers with 8:07 left in the first half. Jamestown shot the ball well in the first half as they shot 54.5 percent from the field. Davenport and Jamestown continued to trade buckets as Davenport took a 38-36 lead into the half.
The back-and-forth battle continued as Davenport was unable to pull away as their largest lead in the second half was just eight points with 10:40 left in the half. The Panthers shot the ball better in the second half as they shot 53.6 percent from the field in the half to finish at 50 percent for the game.
The Panthers held a four point lead over the Jimmies with 1:36 left in regulation. After a missed shot and a turnover by Davenport, Jamestown found themselves down by two points and position of the ball with 10 seconds to go in regulation. Brequan Tucker hit a three point shot to beat the buzzer and boost the Jimmies to an 80-79 win over the Panthers.
DU will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host the WHAC foe Indiana Tech at the DU Student Center at 7:30 p.m. to close out the month.
Post-Game Notes Kevin Rich tied his career high of 23 points, which he set last season against Northwestern Ohio. Davenport had a season low in rebounds with 26 and was out-rebounded for just the second time this season. This is the first time all season that Davenport had two players score at least 20 points in game.
