Comeback Falls Short for Men’s Basketball against Cornerstone

Story Links

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's basketball team traveled down the Beltline on Saturday afternoon to face rival Cornerstone. Dominez Burnett tied his career-high point total with 30 points against the Golden Eagles, and he was just one rebound shy of a double-double as he led the team with nine boards. After trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Panthers were not able to complete their comeback as the lost to the Golden Eagles 87-80. Davenport will be back in action next Saturday as they host Michigan-Dearborn to finish their first semester schedule.

Dominez Burnett led all scorers in the game as he tied his career-high in points with 30 against Cornerstone and Burnett also led the team with nine rebounds in the game. Kevin Rich chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds, while Thomas Drew had 12 points for the Panthers.

To start the game, Davenport jumped out to a 15-8 lead over Cornerstone with 14:32 left in the first half, as the seven point lead by the Panthers in the early going would be their largest lead of the game. Cornerstone regained the lead with 8:32 left in the first half, and the Golden Eagles started to pull away as they led by eight points at halftime, which was the largest lead for either team in the first half.

Cornerstone kept the momentum from the late first half surge to start the second half as they extended their lead to 14 points with 15:22 left in regulation. The Panthers started to make a comeback as Bishop Robinson made a layup to cut the Golden Eagle lead to one point with 5:50 left in the second half. However, the Golden Eagles were able to create some separation as they never let the Panthers regain the lead en route to an 87-80 win over Davenport.

The Panthers will now be off until they closeout the first semester with a home game against Michigan-Dearborn next Saturday at 3 p.m. at the DU Student Center.

Post-Game Notes
This is the first time all season that the Panthers have had a 30 point scorer with the last occurrence being on December 22nd last year as JaVontae Ford scored 31 points against Viterbo… The Panthers were outrebounded for just the third time season and DU is now 1-2 when they have been outrebounded… Cornerstone and Davenport are now tied atop the WHAC standings at 5-1 and Concordia could join them atop the standings with a win over Siena Heights.
