ROCHESTER, Mich. – DU looked to tie the Good Luck DUck series with a sweep of Oakland this, but first they had to travel to Rochester, Mich. to take on Oakland in the third game of the series. The Panthers found themselves coming from behind once again as the Grizzlies struck first, but DU came back to tie the game. After a delay in the action Oakland scored two quick goals in the second to take a 3-1 lead. In the final five minutes of the game Oakland added a goal to take the game, and duck, with a 4-1 win. The Panther and Grizzlies will take faceoff in crucial GLCHL game on Saturday at Patterson Ice Center at 5:30 p.m.
In the firs period the Panthers got behind the eight-ball again as Oakland scored the first goal of the game, but the Panther turned the tide after killing off a penalty and put the Grizzlies on their heals.
Phil Wendecker mad a nice flip dump pass to
Robert Kleiman, who just came out of the box, caught the pass at the blue line and held the puck just long enough to beat the Oakland net minder to tie the game up at one.
DU settled in and started playing in their systems, which lead to sustained pressure in the Oakland zone, but the Panthers could not jam in a goal as the game was 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
The second period was a period as DU used the momentum to start the period of strong, but after a long injury timeout the Panthers lost their energy and Oakland took the momentum to score two quick goals to take a 3-1 lead. DU finally settled back in toward the end of the period, but could not muster a goal before the end of the second period.
The Panthers came out with some intensity and physicality to start the period and some great chances to score, but just could not get their sticks on the loose pucks in the slot.
Tyler Layle had a golden chance, but rung the puck off the crossbar.
After the physicality picked up Oakland padded their as they scored with less than five minutes left in the game to take a 4-1 lead. The Grizzlies hung on to win the game 4-1 and win reclaim the duck.
After the game head coach
Phil Sweeney talked about his teams performance in the game tonight, "It is always tough when you lose a trophy. All you can ask for is chances; we had a bunch of them tonight. We have been scoring a lot lately unfortunately we didn't score enough tonight. We have to move forward and it makes tomorrows game even bigger."
The Panthers and Grizzlies will play again tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. at Patterson Ice Center to finish off the season series between the two teams.
Post-Game Notes
The Duck has changed hands for the past three seasons and the first time either team has been able to win the first three games of the series. The Panthers fall to 20-9-0-2 and
Matt Kaludis is now 8-4-0 on the year.
Robert Kleiman was the only goal scorer for DU and
Phil Wendecker picked up the only assist.
