Rematch with Indiana in 15s Play at Indianapolis on Tap for Women’s Rugby

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Coming off a 76-0 victory over the University of Michigan's junior varsity squad to start off its spring, the Davenport women's rugby team hops on the bus and heads south to Indianapolis to play in a rematch with Indiana University, only this time in 15s play Saturday at 1 p.m. The Panthers are playing three of the four schedule opponents on the road, with Notre Dame College (Ohio) visiting DU Turf Field on March 15.

The Panthers and Hoosiers have seen each other on the pitch prior to Saturday's game. The two schools met for the Plate final in the USA Rugby 7s National Tournament last fall with IU taking a 12-5 win.

Davenport saw itself trailing Indiana all throughout the game. IU's Caroline Walters tallied two tries, one in the third minute and the second in the fifth, to take a 10-0 lead. Indiana also added some breathing room with a conversion in the fifth minute. Davenport took advantage of playing with an extra player after the Hoosiers were penalized on an illegal tackle. Danielle Ordway broke through the Hoosier defense and scored a try in the 13th minute. Although a similar illegal tackle by the Panthers forced the remainder of the contest to be played 6-v-6, the Panthers made one last effort trying to even the score within the final seconds but the ball found its way out of bounds to secure the win for Indiana.
