GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A new era begins this week for the Davenport women's lacrosse team as the Panthers, under the leadership of first-year head coach
Rob Harris, open the 2014 season with an exhibition game at Findlay in Cincinnati, Ohio, Monday at 5 p.m. Once they complete the friendly, the Panthers head further south to Georgia to go on the record with a pair of National Women's Lacrosse League opponents starting with Reinhardt Tuesday at 4 p.m. followed by Emmanuel under the lights Thursday at 6 p.m.
Before they hopped on the bus for the south, Harris sat down with the sports information office for a two-part interview starting today, talking about him settling into Davenport and breaking down his attack. Harris will talk about his defense Tuesday.
Thirteen student-athletes are returning to the program from last year, including leading scorer
Tara Pluger. Pluger finished her freshman campaign with 39 goals and nine assists for 48 points but according to Harris, she will be redshirting her sophomore year. Three Panthers also broke the 20-goal barrier last year, junior
Kaitlyn Lowden, sophomores
Taylor Balch and
Sara Kuzava. Lowden found the back of the net 29 times and Kuzava scored 27. Balch had 26 goals and led the team with 18 assists.
Harris has two newcomers, one from the Rockies and the other from north of the border, joining the team this year that will be helping the offense in
Jessica Lemcke and
Brooke Knoll. A graduate of Henry Street High in Whitby, Ontario, Lemcke helped the school win the LOSSA 'B' championship and was Athlete of the Year in grade 11. A product of Castle View High in Castle Rock, Colo., Knoll earned four letters in lacrosse, one in basketball. She was named 1st-team all-league as a senior, 2nd-team as both a freshman and sophomore.
