Next DU event: Tuesday, April 1 – at Lawrence Tech (Southfield, Mich.) – 5 p.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Needing seven goals to break Michon Moline's career record 110,
Taylor Balch did just that as her seven goals not only set the new mark, but it was helpful in the second-ranked Davenport women's lacrosse team's 17-13 victory over No. 4 Indiana Tech in a battle of the unbeaten in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Monday evening. DU continues to remain unbeaten at 12-0 overall, 7-0 in the WHAC as it finishes the regular-season on the road starting at Lawrence Tech Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Balch won the race with fellow junior
Kaitlyn Lowden for the school's career goals record as both of them started the day with 104. Lowden finished the evening with four to reach 108. In fact, Balch started the year with 73 and Lowden had 67.
The win also give the Panthers their first win over the Warriors (5-3, 5-1 WHAC) in four all-time meetings.
Jessica Lemcke and
Brooke Knoll both had two goals, Hannah Bush and
Sara Kuzava each had one to round out the Panthers scoring. Balch led the pack in the assists department with three while five different Panthers tallied one.
The Panthers couldn't quite stop the Warriors Kendall Guthrie who like Balch found the back of the net seven times while notching one assist. Guthrie also led the contest with a dozen groundballs.
It marked the first time this season the Panthers lost the draw control department as the Warriors won 17-14.
Davenport netminder
Samantha Powers conceded a season-high 13 goals while making three saves. Her opposing goalie Meaghan Eldridge had to stop 14 shots Davenport tallied.
After
Jessica Lemcke got the Panthers started with the contest's first goal in 18 seconds, Knoll followed with the second 34 seconds later. After the Warriors found the back of the net for the first time with 24:22 left, Balch and Knoll ignited a four-goal run that helped the Panthers take a 6-1 lead at the 5:06 mark.
Guthrie kept Indiana Tech in the game by scoring three goals to take a 7-4 deficit into intermission.
After trading goals within the first 12 minutes, Indiana Tech took advantage of the free position opportunity to score at least three and bring the deficit to within two. Davenport got some breathing room thanks to three goals, one by Lemcke and two by Lowden.
Indiana Tech answered back with three straight goals of its own before career-tying and record goals by Balch and one by Bush with 1:16 left put the game out of reach.
