GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Phil Graveline led the way for the 12th-ranked Davenport D1 Hockey team making 30 saves in the game as the Panthers fell to fifth-ranked Stony Brook 3-0 in the round of 16 in the ACHA Division 1 National Tournament. The Panthers drop to 25-12-0-3 on the year to close out their 2013-14 campaign.
In the first ten minutes of the opening period, DU was able to hold the puck in the Stony Brook end courtesy of a few Seawolves penalties, but the Panthers could not score. Stony Brook started to turn the ice and hold the puck in the Panther end, but
Phil Graveline stood on his head to keep Stony Brook at ease. Neither team could break the ice in the first period, as it was scoreless heading into the first intermission.
The second period started the same way as the first with both teams battling for the first goal of the game. DU had a two man advantage with 13:36 left in the second period, but the Seawolves net minder kept the game scoreless. With 4:26 remaining in the period Stony Brook was able work the puck from below the goal line to the front of the net and was able to score the first goal of the game. DU could not score in the final minute of the period and Stony Brook held a one goal lead after the second period.
The Panthers looked to tie the game in the third period, but Stony Brook was able to control the pace of the game and they were able to add onto their one goal lead on a scrambled in front of the net. In the final minutes, Davenport had two power play chances, but could not score. The Seawolves added an empty net goal to seal the game and hand the Panthers a 3-0 loss.
After the game head coach
Phil Sweeney talked about his thoughts on the game, "It was two really good teams play a really good game of hockey. They scored and we did not, it is almost as simple as that, but it is not. It was such a good game all the way around and our guys played well. Graveline, in his final game for us, was incredible, so was
Bo Jacobs,
Phil Wendecker,
John Brooks and
Dustin Wischmeyer, I am going to miss all those guys and I wish all those guys luck in their futures. I wish we would have won, but we did not and it is sad."
The Panthers' season comes to an end with the loss, and they close out the season with a 25-12-0-3 record.
Post-Game Notes
The Panthers were out shot by the Seawolves 31-33 in the game. This was just the second time all season that the Panthers have been shutout. DU closes out their 2013-14 season with a 25-12-0-3 record.
