EJ Grochowalski Selected as Capital One Academic All-American of the Year

Grochowalski Interview | CoSIDA Release

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Davenport baseball graduate EJ Grochowalski had well understood the balance between the academics and athletics during his senior year, and for that the College Sports Information Directors of America selected the first baseman its Capital One Academic All-America of the Year award Tuesday. The 11-man Capital One All-America College Division Baseball First Team is comprised of student-athletes from the NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions and must own a 3.85 grade-point average.

Grochowalski, who transferred to Davenport from Grand Rapids Community College before the start of the 2013 season, graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA in finance last month.

Although he was listed as a first baseman, Grochowalski played a majority of the season as the designated hitter, which made him eligible for the Academic All-America in that position. The Grand Rapids native hit .355 on the year with 14 doubles, two triples, a home run and 34 RBI while making the first-team All-Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

In addition, he slugged for .470 and compiled a .419 on-base percentage for the Panthers. One of four captains selected by head coach Kevin Tidey, Grochowalski contributed to the Panthers success with a program-best 42-17 and winning the program's first WHAC regular-season and tournament titles and a first trip to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round.

Grochowalski finished his career on a nine-game hitting streak. In 106 appearances, he produced a .344 career average with 118 hits, 24 doubles, five triples, six homers and 74 RBI.
