KENOSHA, Wis. — Davenport baseball moved into a tie for second place in the GLIAC with Wayne State (9-6) after a doubleheader split against Wisconsin-Parkside (5-6) on Saturday at Simmons Field, winning the first game 2-1 in 11 innings before falling in the second game 6-4. DU will look to even the weekend series tomorrow at 1 PM.
In the first game, Davenport emerged victorious in a tightly contested matchup that extended into extra innings.
Easton Remick delivered a solid performance, pitching a season-high 8 1/3 innings while allowing just one run on five hits, with two walks and one strikeout. He did not record a decision, but has been the team's best starter in GLIAC play with a 1.73 ERA in 26 innings with 19 strikeouts and 11 walks.
Brayden Flanders pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win (1-1). He allowed just one hit and struck out two batters, finishing with 23 of his 29 pitches recorded as strikes.
The Panthers took an early lead with a run in the first inning when
Sam Clay reached third base on a wild pitch after an infield single and a groundout, then scored on a single to right field by
Justin Johnson. Davenport led 1-0 after the first inning.
Parkside tied the game in the fourth inning when Dylan Sayles singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mason Mitacek, leveling the score at 1-1 through four innings. The game remained tied through regulation, heading into extra innings. In the eleventh inning,
Dylan Pawenski singled and advanced to second on a walk by
Aiden Warn.
Travis Liford followed with an infield single, allowing Pawenski to score from second and give Davenport a 2-1 lead. Flanders, who entered in the ninth inning, secured the win by keeping the Rangers scoreless in the bottom of the eleventh.
Wyatt Epple contributed two hits and successfully stole two bases, while Liford added two hits, including a double, and drove in one run. Johnson recorded two hits, collected one RBI, and drew a walk.
In the second game, Davenport started strong, taking a 2-1 lead in the first inning. Clay singled to center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Johnson then grounded out to third to drive in Clay for a 1-0 lead.
Ben Korson then added to the lead with an infield single to shortstop, scoring
Carson Lindau. However, Parkside responded with a decisive three-run second inning, highlighted by a groundout from Angel Rades and a two-RBI triple by Benjamin Loyd, putting Parkside ahead 4-2.
The Rangers extended their lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning when Loyd singled to right field, driving in two runs to give him four for the game. The Panthers fought back in the seventh inning, with Clay doubling to left field and scoring on a single from Johnson. Lindau also scored on a groundout by Warn, narrowing the gap to 6-4. Liford was the tying run at the plate with Johnson on second, but grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
Colton Blankstrom started for Davenport, pitching five innings and allowing seven hits and six earned runs, with three walks and a strikeout, resulting in the loss and moving his record to 2-3.
Lucas Coll relieved him in the sixth inning, delivering a scoreless inning without allowing any hits or walks. Lindau contributed by scoring twice and adding a hit, while Clay finished with two hits, including a double, and scored twice while drawing a walk. Johnson provided offensive support with two RBIs and a hit, and Korson tallied two hits and drove in one run.
