5-Set Thriller Goes to Racers as Volleyball Win Streak Ends

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The No. 24 ranked volleyball team extended its set streak to 25 straight in the opener but the visitors from Northwestern Ohio took three of the next four to pull out a 3-2 upset in Grand Rapids. The loss is the first for DU since a trip to Nebraska to start the season as they fall to 9-4 on the season and 4-1 in league action. Davenport will return to action next Wednesday when they face Cornerstone on the road.

Hannah Stone (18), Marcey DeHaan (15) and Krissy Dill (11) all reached double-digit kills but it was not enough to help the Panthers rally from down two sets to one against the Racers of Northwestern Ohio. DU dominated almost every statistical category (.220-.196 in hitting percentage, 91-73 digs) but the Racers came back from a 13-11 deficit in the fifth to post the win.

DU cruised to the opening set win of 25-18 to post their 25th straight set win dating back to September 3 but then the Racers countered with two strong performances of 25-23 and 25-18 to take a 2-1 lead.

After DU got off to a 5-1 start in the fourth, the Panthers posted a 25-16 to force the fifth and deciding set which would be there first match to go the distance this season. The score was never separated by more than two points in the final stanza but after DU led 13-11, the Racers scored four straight to close out the match 15-13.

Amber Getty posted 53 assists in the loss while Morgan Torres (22), Lexie Spetoskey (20) and Krissy Dill (16) all finished in double-digit digs.

DU will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday, September 24 when they travel to cross-town rival Cornerstone University for a 7 p.m. match.

Post-Match Notes
