D2 Hockey Beats Northern Michigan in Physical Battle, 10-3

Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – After being away from action for over a month, the Davenport D2 hockey team return to action on the road against Northern Michigan. In a physical game, the Panthers were able to come away with a 10-3 win as Daniel Swink and Branden Burton both tallied hat tricks to lead Davenport to the win and push their record to 13-1-1 on the season. Davenport and Northern Michigan will round out their weekend series in Marquette, Mich., on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
 
To start the game, Davenport was able to score three straight goals in the first period to jump out to a 3-0 lead, before Northern Michigan was able to grab their first goal of the game with 40 seconds left in the period. The Panthers had three different goal scorers in the period as Kyle McConnell, Daniel Swink and Jake Otto were able to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
 
In the second period, both teams went on two goal runs as Swink scored back-to-back goals to cap off his second hat-trick of the season and gave Davenport a 5-1 lead. However, the Wildcats answered back with two goals of their own to close out the period as DU held a 5-3 lead heading into the third.
 
As the physicality picked up to start the third period, Davenport was able to score two quick goals to start the period. After the goals from McConnell and Burton, the intensity and emotion picked up on both sides as they physicality of the continued to intensify. The Panthers scored the final three goals of the game, highlight by two goals from Burton, to round out his hat trick, and a goal from Tyler Thomas, which was his first in a Panther uniform. Davenport won the game 10-3, as Tyler Kuehl picked up his seventh win in net making 25 saves.
 
After the game head coach Chris Green talked about his thoughts on the game, "It was a very hard fought and physical game with such high emotion down the stretch. It was great to see both teams come together after the game even after battling it out for 60 minutes in such a physical game, which really showed the class of the game on both sides."
 
Davenport will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they closeout the weekend series against Northern Michigan.
