GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's basketball team will return home after playing five of their last six games on the road to start 2015. The Panthers hold a one game lead over Cornerstone, as well as Northwestern Ohio, in the WHAC. Davenport comes into the weekend with an 18-3 record on year overall, and holds the fifth ranking in the NAIA. Cornerstone is ranked seventh in the NAIA to set up a crucial WHAC matchup between two top-ten teams in the NAIA. Live Audio A Quick Look at Cornerstone – 17-4, 11-2 WHAC – Head Coach Kim EldersThe Golden Eagles are ranked seventh in the NAIA in the most recent polls released this past week. Cornerstone as a 17-4 overall record and is in tie for second place in the WHAC with an 11-2 record. This season the Golden Eagles put up an average of 80.2 points per game, while allowing their opponent to score just 67 points. Kyle Steigenga has led the way for the Golden Eagles with 19.2 points per game, and they have also returned last season WHAC newcomer, Ben Lanning who has played in just 10 of the teams 21 games this season. The Golden Eagle defense has the second best field goal percentage defense and fifth best 3-point field goal percentage allowing just 38.9 percent and 29.4 percent, respectively.
Panthers vs. Golden EaglesIn the all-time series between Davenport and Cornerstone, the Golden Eagles won the first ten meetings between the two meeting and won 12 of the first 15 meetings between the two programs. Since then, the Panthers have won six of the last of the last ten meetings, but Cornerstone has won the last three meetings including the WHAC Championship game last season. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series 16-9 overall.
The Last Time Against the Golden EaglesThe last time the Panthers and Golden Eagles met was on December 6th earlier this season in the Mol Arena at Cornerstone. Cornerstone shot an even 50 percent from the field in the game, while holding the Panthers to just 40 percent shooting. After the Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the game at 14 with 15:22 left in the second half, Davenport brought the game within one point, but they were able to tie the game or take the lead as Cornerstone went onto win the game 87-80 to hand the Panthers their only conference loss of the season.
