Story Links

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport men's basketball team faced their second crosstown rival in as many games as they hosted Aquinas on Wednesday night. Dominez Burnett led the team with 22 points and seven rebounds, while Kevin Rich had 18 points for the Panthers. Davenport beat Aquinas 80-73 to move to 20-3 on the season and stays atop the WHAC with a 14-1 conference record. Davenport will hit the road this weekend as they face Madonna on Saturday in Livonia, Mich., at 3 p.m.

For the fourth straight game, Dominez Burnett broke the 20 point mark as he had 22 points in the game and had seven rebounds for the Panthers. Kevin Rich had 18 points in the game and was 5-for-7 from the field. The DU starters combined for 68 points in the game as Nick Gamble had 12 points, while Bishop Robinson had ten in the game.

Davenport started the game on an 8-2 run, and tried to pull away in the early going, but the Saints were able to keep the game close throughout the first half as Davenport never led by more than nine points in the first half. The Panthers took a 42-33 lead into the half, which tied their largest lead of the first half after Dawid Czerniawski hit jumper from the elbow to beat the buzzer and capped off his scoring in the game with six points.

After scoring just two point in the first half, Burnett went off for 20 in the second half and the Panthers jumped out to their largest lead of the game with 17:48 left in the game after a pair of free throws from Bishop Robinson to give Davenport a 46-33 lead. The Saints tried to claw their way back into the game as they pulled within three points with 7:54 left in regulation, and that was a close as they would get as the Panthers were able to hold them off and win the game, 80-73.

The Panthers will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Livonia, Mich., to face Madonna on Saturday at 3 p.m.
