LIVONIA, Mich. –
Dawid Czerniawski scored 10 of his career-high 14 points in the first half,
Kevin Rich add 20 point and
Dominez Burnett tallied 13 as the trio led the No. 5 Davenport men's basketball team to a 70-53 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory over host Madonna Saturday afternoon.
In addition to the win, the Panthers (21-3, 15-1 WHAC) moved two games ahead of second place Northwestern Ohio and Cornerstone after the Golden Eagles dominated the Racers in Grand Rapids. The Panthers meet the Racers next Saturday in Lima.
Despite being edged by the Crusaders (10-14, 6-10 WHAC) in the rebounding department, 39-37,
Bishop Robinson led the effort for the Panthers with eight boards.
While the Panthers did compile a 45.8 field goal percent, they did collect a good portion of their 70 points on the free throw line, shooting 20-of-30.
Madonna, which shot 30.2 percent from the field, was led by Chris Dierker with 11 points and Donald Owens with 10. Dierker also went to the glass eight times to lead the Crusaders.
Czerniawski and Rich helped Davenport jump up front with a 15-2 run 4:29 into the contest. Madonna did bring the deficit down to eight on several occasions but a late Davenport run enabled the Panthers to take a 40-25 lead into the break.
Before their trip to UNOH next weekend, the Panthers will host Lawrence Tech at the Student Center Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
