Burnett Sets School Point Record in 85-78 Win at Michigan-Dearborn

DEARBORN, Mich. - The senior season for Dominez Burnett got a little sweeter on Wednesday night as the Flint native set the Davenport single-game record with 40 points in an 85-78 win at Michigan-Dearborn. The previous record of 36 points stood for 10-plus years held by James Allen who set the mark on Jan. 15, 2005 against Madonna. Burnett connected on 14-of-21 (3-of-6 3FG) from the floor and 9-of-11 from the free throw line on the historic night. He also had six rebounds, three steals and two assists in 36 minutes. The 6-5 forward is now averaging 30 points per game through a 5-0 start (3-0 WHAC) for the Panthers.

No. 3 Davenport led 47-28 at halftime but needed to hold on down the stretch as the Wolverines made a comeback attempt outscoring the Panthers, 50-38, in the final 20 minutes. DU started off with a 13-3 run in the first 4:52 as Burnett scored seven points during the run. UM-D cut the lead to 20-13 with 10:51 left in the half but then DU went on a 10-0 run to take a 30-13 lead with eight minutes to go in the first half. Davenport had 18 points in the paint and 15 points off turnovers in the opening half.

Burnett scored 18 points in the first half and set the record with 3:50 left at the free throw line with his second free throw extending the lead to 80-64. DU led by as many as 26 early in the second half, but Michigan-Dearborn chipped away and cut the deficit to single digits at 68-59 with 8:59 remaining after a pair of free throws by Jason Penn. The Panthers led by 16 with 1:35 to play, but the Wolverines scored 10 of the game's final 11 points to make it a seven-point spread.

Davenport shot 49.2 percent for the game and were 14-of-19 at the foul line. Braima Hai added 12 points going 5-of-7 from the floor. Wes Webbert set a career-high with 11 points off the bench going 5-of-7 from the floor. The Panthers were under double digits in turnovers for the second straight game with 8 while UM-D committed 16 turnovers. The Wolverines got 25 points from Marcus Williams including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. They shot 44.4 percent from the floor (10-of-20 3FG) and 20-of-26 from the foul line.
