WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Davenport men's basketball team ventured out of NAIA for the first time this season as they traveled to Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday and pulled off an 85-74 win over the Warhawks improving to 6-0. UWW won the 2013-14 NCAA D3 National Championship and last season finished 24-4 and won the WIAC.
"This was a big win for our program to go on the road and beat a talented Whitewater team," said head coach
Burt Paddock. "We are finding ways to win and Dominez (Burnett) is really in a groove right now. He plays at such a high level and shows up ready to go every night. We have another big one at Platteville tomorrow night but this was a great start to the weekend."
Burnett scored 30 or more for the third time this season and followed up his school-record 40 points with 37 including 9-of-14 from the floor and 18-of-23 from the free throw line. He broke his own school-record for made free throws (16) and also grabbed six rebounds in 35 minutes.
Wayne Bradford scored 19 points going 6-of-8 from the floor and 6-of-6 at the foul line. Davenport finished 28-of-38 from the charity stripe while Whitewater went 18-of-26.
Kevin Rich had a season-high 16 points and scored in double figures for the third time this season. Rich went 5-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-8 from the arc. He now stands second all-time at DU with 135 career three-pointers. The Warhawks were led by Trinson White and Tyler Edmondson with 17 points each. Edmondson grabbed a whopping 19 rebounds and collected four steals.
The Panthers led 42-40 at intermission and outscored the Warhawks 43-34 in the second half. Davenport finished 25-of-45 (.556) from the floor including 7-of-17 from behind the arc. UW-Whitewater shot 42.6 percent from the floor (26-of-61) but just 4-of-13 from behind the arc. Each team grabbed 33 rebounds and scored 32 points in the paint and 13 points off turnovers. The game saw five ties and 10 lead changes. DU led for 35:52 while the home team led for 1:36.
