GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Junior guard
Chri Carter fueled the Panther attack early in Wednesday evening's matchup with No. 21 Madonna University. Carter helped lead a stifling DU defense that forced 30 Crusader turnovers and converted those opportunities into 45 points. The Panthers were relentless offensively the entire game as they would go on to tie the DU school record for field goals made in a game (48). Carter led the DU attack with 18 points while she also totaled six steals and six assists as the Panthers rolled past Madonna, 117-53.
DU did not hesitate to jump out on top of the Crusaders as they took a 27-12 lead into the second quarter. The Panthers would then bust the game wide open with a 13-0 run to begin the second quarter. This was sparked once again by Carter as she scored the first four points of the quarter to help the Panthers put the game out of reach early.
Molly Babbs aided the Panther offense as she recorded 10 points in the first half on her way to a 12-point performance.
The Panthers would continue this momentum into the second half as they would shoot 70. 3% from the field, including 57.1% from behind the arch. The DU defense did not let up in the second half either as they forced 13 Crusader turnovers. The Panthers would see senior
Shaina Johnson secure her best performance of the season as she totaled 11 second half points after going 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from behind the arch.
DU would cruise to their second largest margin of victory of the season and head coach
Robyn Scherr-Wells was pleased with the overall team performance, "I feel like we played our best defensive game of the season tonight. We caused them to turn the ball over a lot and it created a lot of fast break opportunities for us on offense. We played a very complete game on both ends. It is a great way to head into Thanksgiving break."
The Panthers had a wide-spread contribution from their team as five Panthers reached double figures in scoring. DU committed only 11 turnovers for the game while they assisted on 33 of their 48 made field goals.Â
