KINGSPORT, Tenn. - The men's basketball team dropped their first game of the season 80-74 on Sunday against No. 7 Union (Ky.) at the NAIA D2 Showcase. The Panthers gave up a season-high 49.1 percent shooting against the Bulldogs including 56 percent in the first half. The big stat line was DU going 21-of-33 at the foul line for a season-low 63.6 percent. It was just the second time they shot less than 70 percent this season.
Davenport never led in the contest and they kept fighting but could not get over the hump especially in the second half. The Panthers cut the deficit to four points on six occasions in the final six minutes and even had it down to three with 28 seconds to go.
Dominez Burnett scored a team-high 20 points but was just 4-of-13 from the floor and 10-of-17 at the foul line.
Wayne Bradford scored 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Kevin Rich had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds in 37 minutes.
