Panthers Bounce Back with 66-63 Win Over No. 20 Saint Francis

HUNTINGTON, Ind. –  Senior Tiesha Stokes sparked the DU comeback Saturday afternoon in Huntington, Indiana as the Panthers came back from a nine-point deficit for the first win of the season. Stokes would score 15 of her 17 points in the second half to help DU secure a 66-63 win over No. 20 Saint Francis and advance their record to 1-2.

The Panthers found themselves in a close defensive battle for their third straight game as they held a 31-28 edge at the break. DU looked to find consistency on the offensive side of the court as they shot 41% from the floor. The Panthers continued to own the glass as they out rebounded the Cougars, 20-18, and were led offensively by Alex Law as she totaled seven points to give DU the three-point lead.

The Cougars then jumped ahead in the third quarter as they would out score the Panthers, 26-15, for the quarter and hold a nine-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. This is when the Panthers responded behind the leadership of their seniors as they would outscore the Cougars 23-11 in the final 10 minutes. Big shots from Emily Severn and clutch free throws from Hannah Wilkerson added to the consistent play of Stokes as the Panthers secured their first win of the season. Stokes totaled 18 points for the game while Severn added 13, including eight in the second half. Wilkerson would hit a clutch free throw to extend the DU lead to three points as time was winding down and the Panther defense continued its stout play as they did not allow an open look for the Cougars in their final possession.

Severn came up clutch from behind the arc as she led the Panthers going 2-for-3 to lead Davenport who went 6-for-12 as a team. The Panther defense continued to play stingy as they created 11 steals and held the Cougars to 40.4% shooting from the field. Chri Carter and Stokes led the team with three steals each.

This was the first win at DU for first year head coach Robyn Scherr-Wells and she commented on her team's comeback performance. "It feels great to get our first win. I am so proud of our girls for fighting back in this game and making plays down the stretch. We couldn't have had a tougher opening stretch playing three ranked teams on the road. We're learning a lot from these games and this will only make us a better team down the road."

The Panthers finish their opening four-game road stretch with their conference opener on November 11 in Detroit, Michigan against Marygrove College.
