GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Head Coach
Burt Paddock picked up win No. 200 at Davenport University on Wednesday night with a 73-56 victory over visiting Siena Heights University. The program improved to 101-15 at the DU Student Center under Paddock's watch and the Panthers beat the Saints for the 16th straight time dating back to Jan. 28, 2009. The Panthers left little doubt in this one as they led for all but five seconds of the contest. DU was strong in the painted area outscoring SHU, 36-14, for the contest.
Jason Jordan got his first start of the season and made a three-pointer in the first five seconds and then hit another one 36 seconds later which sparked an 8-0 run to start the game for DU. The Saints battled back and cut the lead to 12-10 at the 10:03 mark on a pair of Jerrell Martin free throws. Davenport scored the next five points to lead by seven as
Dominez Burnett made three free throws and
Wayne Bradford made a layup. The lead built to 26-16 at the 6:01 mark on a layup by
Wes Webbert. The Panthers increased their lead to 33-21 with 2:54 left in the half on a three-point play by
Kevin Rich. DU led 35-27 at halftime shooting 41.4 percent from the floor.
The Panthers began to run away in the first eight minutes of the second half building their lead to 54-36 after a Bradford triple. Webbert got into the flow and buried a triple on the sideline to give the team a 60-40 lead with 10:14 remaining. Siena Heights never got the lead under double digits for the rest of the game. The Saints managed to shoot 28 percent in the second half and were just 1-of-9 behind the arc. DU shot 52.2 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the game at 46.2 percent (24-of-52). The Panthers took care of the ball with eight turnovers while SHU coughed it up 15 times. The opponent made more free throws for just the second time this season as the Saints were 20-of-30 while the Panthers were 19-of-30.
Burnett eclipsed 20 points for the 10th time in 12 games this season finishing with 23 points on 7-of-12 from the floor and 9-of-12 at the foul line. Bradford hit double digits for the ninth time this season with 14 points and also had four steals and three rebounds. Webbert failed to score in yesterday's game but finished tonight with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting off the bench.
Braima Hai led the team with four assists and had no turnovers at the point.
