Men’s Basketball Clinches Share of WHAC Title in Win over Marygrove

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After losing their last game on the road to Lourdes, the Davenport men's basketball team looked to rebound on Saturday afternoon against Marygrove. On Senior Day, the Panthers were able to defeat the Mustangs, 104-87, to clinch a share of a third-ever Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season title. Dominez Burnett led the Panthers with 27 points, while Kevin Rich chipped in with 21 points.

Davenport will now host the first round of the WHAC Tournament at the DU Student Center on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The league office will announce the bracket at the conclusion of the Aquinas-Siena Heights game Sunday afternoon as several tiebreakers need to be determined for seeding purposes. The Panthers know they will host the first round of the WHAC Tournament at the Student Center Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Burnett and Rich led the Davenport offensive attack as they score a combined 48 points for the Panthers, as Rich tied his career-high for three-point field goals made going 5-for-8 from behind the arc. Senior, Thomas Drew was the only other starter for the Panthers to hit double figures as he scored 11 points all of which came in the first half. Off the bench, Bishop Robinson chipped in with 15 points and Dawid Czerniawski had 12 for the Panthers.

In the first half, neither team could take control of the game as the neither team led by more than six points, while the score changed hands four times and was also tied four times throughout the course of the half. Marygrove took their largest lead of the game with 4:02 left in the half as they led 34-30, but the Panthers were able to go on a 9-0 to regain the lead and take a 45-42 lead into the half.

The Panthers started to pull in away in the second half as they went on a 12-0 run in the first 2:06 of the half to take a 57-42 lead. Davenport was able to stretch their lead to 76-47 with 12:10 left in regulation, and that was the largest lead of the game for the Panthers. The Mustangs tried to chip away at the Panther lead as they cut the lead to 96-84 with 3:00 left in regulation, but that is as close as Marygrove would get, as Davenport went on to win, 104-87.

Post-Game Notes
Davenport shot a season-high 78 times and set another season-high making 42 field goals… This is the first time all season Davenport eclipsed the century mark and the first time since January 15, 2014 at home against Marygrove, where the Panthers scored 101 points against the Mustangs… The Panthers tied their season-high for made three pointers with 11.
