LYNCHBURG, Va. – After making the trek to Lynchburg, Va. only to see their first schedule game of the 2015 season be postponed, the Davenport men's lacrosse team finally hit the turf and squared off against No. 19 Liberty University. The Panthers fell behind early, and could never find a way to complete any sort of comeback as they dropped their first game of the season to the Flames by a score of 13-9.
Liberty was able to put a game under their 2015 belt as they defeated Clemson 10-5 on Friday, February 20, and their cobwebs seemed to be all shaken off for their game against Davenport as they scored four unanswered goals in the first period.
Liberty then scored three more goals to start the second period, until
Jack Turcotte was able to find the back of the net for the Panthers first goal of the season.
Devon Benson would then respond with a goal of his own shortly after, narrowing the score 7-2 with 4:32 left in the first half.
Jack Faulkner and Benson would add one goal each for the Panthers, sending Davenport into the half down 8-4.
The Panthers would make a change at goalie for the second half as senior
Logan Poe was replaced by freshman
Tate Ferris, who filled in nicely by recording seven saves in the half.
Davenport would make things interesting in the second half of the third period, as well as the beginning of the fourth when Turcotte and Benson would add on one more goal each, giving Benson three on the game and Turcotte two.
Bryan Larocque would also net two goals of his own, both coming in the fourth period.
Unfortunately, the Panthers late heroics were not enough as the final buzzer sounded and the final score read 13-9 in favor of Liberty.
The Panthers will hit the road again next Friday and Saturday as they travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami (OH) and Virginia Tech.
