Men’s Basketball Welcomes Siena Heights to Start WHAC Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After completing their regular season last weekend against Marygrove, the Davenport men's basketball team will open their postseason slate as the number one overall seed in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament. Davenport will start the tournament on Thursday night as they host eighth-seed Siena Heights at 7:30 p.m. in the DU Student Center, where Rick Berkey will have the call live on the DAN.

A Quick Look at Siena Heights – 11-19, 7-15 WHAC – Head Coach Joe Pechota
Siena Heights enters the WHAC Tournament as the eighth seed in the tournament after going 7-15 in the conference and winning the tiebreaker over Indiana Tech and Michigan-Dearborn to earn the final spot in the WHAC Tournament. This season Christian Covile has led the Saints scoring an average of 13.8 points per game throughout the regular season. George Goodman in the only other player for Siena Heights scoring in double figures with 11.4 points per game. Jerrell Martin ranks tenth in the NAIA in total blocks (58) and block per game (1.9).
 
Panthers vs. Saints
In the all-time series between Davenport and Siena Heights, the Panthers lead the all-time series 16-8. Davenport has won the last 14 consecutive meetings after the Saints were able to win eight of the first ten overall meetings. This season, the Panthers were able to win both meetings in the regular season.
 
The Last Time Against the Saints
The last time Siena Heights and Davenport met was in mid-January this season in Adrian, Mich. In the first half, the Saints and Panthers battle back-and-forth as Siena Heights was able to take a 38-30 lead at the half, after the lead changed hands six times and was tied on four different occasions. Davenport started the second half on an 11-0 run to take a 41-38 lead, and they never looked back as they led by as many as 12 with 5:15 left in the game. The Saints tried to battle as they cut the lead to seven, but Davenport held off the late rally by Siena Heights to win 69-61. After scoring just two points in the first half, Dominez Burnett was able to go off for 27 in the second half to lead the Panthers with 29 points.
