Comeback Falls Short For No 22 Men’s Lacrosse Against No 10 Va. Tech

OXFORD, OHIO – Coming off an impressive firs win of the season against Miami (OH) Friday night, the Davenport Men's Lacrosse team was back in action Saturday afternoon as they took on no. 10 Virginia Tech at Miami's Yager Stadium. Devon Benson, Joe Lopez and Jack Turcotte each recorded two goals apiece, but was not enough as the Panthers dropped their second game of the season by a score of 13-8. The Panthers will finish off their three-week road stretch next weekend as they travel to Buffalo, NY for a pair of games against New Hampshire and Buffalo University.

No. 10 Virginia Tech was able to get on the board first after an Alex Clough goal just 1:05 into the game, but the Panthers responded with two goals from Benson and Lopez. However with 5;56 left in the first period, the Hokies were able to knot the score at 2-2 heading into the second.

The second period involved Virginia Tech increasing their lead to 5-2, and not allowing a Panther goal until 1:28 remained in the period where Bryan Larocque beat the Hokie defense on the right side and chipped in his fourth goal of the season. The Panthers trailed 5-3 at halftime.

The Panthers were caught by surprise again to start the third period as Virginia Tech scored four unanswered goals, creating a 9-3 lead midway through the period. Senior Parker Horvath would inch the Panthers closer as he netted his first goal of the season with 6:23 left to play. Jack Turcotte then took matters into his own hands as he scored two consecutive goals for the Panthers to close out the third period.

Down only three goals to start the fourth, Benson was able to net his second goal of the game and sixth of the season to put the Panthers down only two. Unfortunately the Hokie attack was just too strong for Davenport as they pulled away scoring the games last three goals, winning by a final score of 13-8.

Freshman Tate Ferris started his second consecutive game at goalie, allowing a season high 13 goals and recording eight saves for the second straight night.

The Panthers head to Buffalo, NY next weekend for two games against New Hampshire and Buffalo University on Saturday and Sunday.
