ST. CHARLES, MO. –
Michael Houston recorded a try and
Jean Pierre Eloff tallied three penalty kicks in a 20-16 defeat for the no. 3 Men's Rugby team Saturday night against conference rival no. 4 Lindenwood. The Panthers now fall to 0-2 in Mid-South play this spring, and will look to rebound from a tough road stretch as they host the Grand Rapids Gazelles next Saturday in their Turf Field spring debut.
The Panthers got out to an early 10-0 lead as
Gabe Sochanek broke off a long run off a pass from Eloff, and was brought down just short of the goal line. Houston was then able to pick up the ball from the ruck and dive over the try line for a scoe.
After Eloff converted his first penalty kick, Lindenwood got on the board with a try but failed on their conversion attempt making it a 10-5 score. Lindenwood was able to tally another try, and the Panthers were then able to convert two more penalty kicks in the half before heading into halftime with a 16-10 lead.
Lindenwood's defense would step up to the plate in the second half, keeping Davenport scoreless and took the lead in the 68
th minute after capitalizing on a missed Eloff penalty kick.
The Panthers were able to regain possession again on a last opportunity to mount an attack but ended up losing the ball, allowing Lindenwood to kick the ball out to end the game.
