ATLANTA, GA – The Davenport women's rugby team had a very impressive day at the USA Division I Atlanta 7's Qualifier on Saturday as they squared off against several division I programs and finished second overall. On the day the Panthers (who are a division II team), finished 3-2 on the day against all division I competition, and came up just short of a tournament title as they fell to American International College for 24-19 in the championship match.
In the title match, the Panthers found themselves in a hole down 17-0, but stormed back to take a 19-17 lead half way through the second half. A breakdown in defense led AIC to regain the lead, eventually holding on for a 24-19 victory.
The Panthers also opened the entire tournament with a match against AIC, in which Davenport won that game with a 12-0 victory.
On the day,
Danielle Ordway recorded seven  tries and four conversions, while
Ashlee Byrge had herself a day as well, recording five tries and six conversions.
Brittany O'Dell and
Jennifer Harig also recorded two tries for the Panthers on the day.
This was the second time Davenport and American International squared off on the day, as the two opened the tournament against one another that ended up in a 12-0 Panther victory. Davenport also split a pair of games with Cal-Berkley, and defeated South Carolina in the quarterfinals. All three opponents were division I programs.
The Panthers will be back in action in 15's play next Saturday as they visit Lindenwood.
