CLEVELAND, Ohio. – The Davenport women's rugby team participated in the USA Rugby 7's National Qualifer earlier today at Notre Dame College, going 2-1 in in the tournament by defeating Ohio State and Michigan, but coming up just short to no. 1 Notre Dame College in the third round.
Ashlee Byrge led the Panthers four total tries on the day, as well as seven conversions and a penalty kick. The Panthers will continue 7's play next weekend where they will compete in the Big Ten National 7's Qualifier.
The Panthers defeated Ohio State 49-0 in Davenport's first game of the day, as
Brittany O'Dell recorded two tries and two conversions to go along with Byrge's one try and four conversions.
Melissa Francis also scored twice,
Julia Mayer scored once, and
Jennifer Harig was crossed the try zone for the first of two total times on the day in the victory.
In game two, Davenport defeated Michigan 24-7 in a much tighter contest than the previous one. Byrge led all scorers with two tries and
Hunter Moreland was also scored to lead the Panthers. Byrge was a perfect two for two in conversion kicks, and also connected on her lone penalty kick attempt.
In game three, Davenport received scores from Byrge and Harig, but was unable to complete the comeback against the number one team in the nation as Notre Dame College defeated the Panthers 19-12 to end Davenport's national qualifying bid.
The Panthers will be back in action next weekend at the University of Michigan, as they'll compete in the Big Ten National 7's Qualifier.
