Panthers Split Another Doubleheader at Home

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – KC Dunne had three hits including a double and a home run, Emily Maves struck out seven in two appearances as the No. 16 Davenport softball team split a doubleheader for the second consecutive day Sunday. The Panthers held on to game one 2-0 but the Crusaders countered and took game two 7-1 at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.

Both teams closed the day with identical 8-2 records to share the lead in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings.

Game 1 – Davenport 2, Madonna 0
Crusader starting pitcher Bree Crampton (11-6) held the Panthers hitless until the fourth inning, when Alyssa Koziol found a gap in left center to score Alyssa Eastman from second base. Davenport's second run came in the sixth when Dunne hit a rocket to left center the first pitch she saw to start the frame.

Maves (16-3), meanwhile, kept the Crusaders from reaching third, allowing only two leadoff doubles. She finished the day conceding four hits and a walk.

Game 2 – Madonna 7, Davenport 0
Against Erin Combs (13-3), the WHAC ERA leader, Davenport got on the board first in the third inning. Dunne hit a two-out double to left field and Paige Sant'Angelo followed hitting into a hole on the left side for an RBI single.

But the lead didn't last long as the Crusaders countered with five runs in the fourth to end Alyssa Eastman's (11-3) day. Eastman went only 3 2/3 on the circle allowing five runs on six hits and three walks.

Davenport added its second run in the sixth when Eastman hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Dunne from third.

The Panthers wrap up the homestand Wednesday with Cornerstone. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
