GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport softball team concluded their eight game home stand, as the hosted crosstown rival Cornerstone on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers were able to sweep the Golden Eagles as they took game one 8-0 in five innings, and won game two, 9-7.
Emily Maves picked up her second career perfect game in the first game of the afternoon, while striking out seven batters on the day. Davenport will be on the road this weekend as they face crosstown rival Aquinas on Saturday and Siena Heights on Sunday.
The perfect game by Maves in the first game of the afternoon was the fourth perfect game in school history as she and former Panther, Sam Cole, each have recorded two perfect games.
Game 1 – Davenport 8, Cornerstone 0 (5 innings)Emily Maves (17-3) was in control on the mound as she posted her second career perfect game and the first perfect game in program history since she threw one last season against Michigan-Dearborn on April 30th.
KC Dunne was able to lead the Panther offense as she went 2-for-2 in the game scoring two runs, while driving in one more run. Whitney Heasley (1-2) started for the Golden Eagles, but the Panthers were able to take a 5-0 lead after three innings and the Golden Eagles brought in Rachel Nelson in relief. Davenport was able to open up the doubleheader against Cornerstone with an 8-0 win in five innings.
Game 2 – Davenport 9, Cornerstone 7In the night cap of the doubleheader against rival Cornerstone, Davenport was able to get on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as
Paige Sant'Angelo scored off a ground out by
Ashleigh Blovsky. The Golden Eagles came back to score three runs in the fourth, followed by three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
In the home half of the fifth inning, the Panthers came back to score seven runs in the inning, as
Carli SanMillan regained the lead for Davenport with a two RBI double to cap off the inning. Sant'Angelo capped off the scoring in the game for Davenport with a double to center to drive in Dunne, to give the Panthers a 9-7 win.
The Panthers will be away from this weekend as they travel down the Beltline to face Aquinas on Saturday before the Siena Heights in Adrian, Mich., on Sunday.
