ANN ARBOR, Mich. – For the second weekend in a row, the Davenport women's rugby team has come up just one game shy of winning a national qualifying tournament, as the Panthers were shutout by Penn State 31-0 in the Big Ten 7's Qualifier on Saturday. However, the Panthers were still able to punch their ticket to the ACRA Women's National Championships with their two-straight runner up performances and a 9-4 record in 7's play this spring.
Leading up to the championship game defeat against Penn State, the Panthers opened up the tournament with a 39-7 victory over Ferris State, followed by nail-biting 17-10 win over familiar foe Lindenwood. Davenport then posted two-straight 31-0 shutouts against both Ohio State and Michigan, before being shutout 31-0 themselves by the Nittany Lions.
Danielle Ordway led the Panthers on the day with 8 tries and two conversion kicks, while
Ashlee Byrge scored four tries of her own and connected on 5 conversions.
Brittany O'Dell and
Jennifer Harig also recorded a pair of tries on the day, as well as
Carrie Eggleston and
Brenna Donahue each scoring once themselves.
Hannah Tennant was perfect on all five of her conversion attempts.
The Panthers will now have two weeks to prepare for the ACRA 7's National Championships, which will take place May 2
nd and 3
rd in West Point, N.Y.
