ADRIAN, Mich. – The No. 7 Davenport baseball team claimed a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victories but had to get them with two different outcomes Sunday. The Panthers had to rally from a two-run deficit to take game one in the ninth 4-3 while racking up 13 hits in a 12-0 shutout in the nightcap.
Brendan Bender continues to stay hot as the senior had a three-RBI day at the plate.
Zac Wilson and
Zack Sardellitti both produced four this on the day to lead the Panthers.
Game 1 – Davenport 4, Siena Heights 3The Panthers had to rally after the Saints tallied two runs in the second off of
Anthony Alarcon. The left-hander lasted only the two innings scattering four hits.
Davenport got on the board in the fifth.
Zack Sardellitti led off with a single down the right field line,
Jordan Zylstra moved the runner over to second on a sacrifice bunt and after stealing third,
Dre Celestijn hit into a force play that was enough to cut the Saints lead to one.
Siena Heights did get the two-run lead back in its half of the inning and the lead would disappear in the eighth when
Brendan Bender hit a two-run single to right field to score in the speeds of
Matt Hoge and
Cam Cooper.
Sardellitti would open the ninth inning with a double, courtesy runner
Tim Steffes moved to third on another sacrifice bunt by Zylstra and scored on
Brandon Cable's sacrifice fly.
Corbin Clouse helped keep the Panthers in the game allowing an unearned run in four innings of relief.
Jonathan Cheshire picked up the win after throwing 1 2/3 innings.
Game 2 – Davenport 7, Siena Heights After stranding runners in scoring position the first two innings, the Panthers came through in the third. The bases were loaded when Sardellitti singled and Bender and Cable were hit by the pitch.
Matt Priebe drove in the first run with a base hit to third and Celestijn followed with a two-run single to left.
Davenport added three more runs in the following inning, scoring twice on two wild pitches and an RBI single by Bender.
Siena Heights only got two hits in the game, all off of starter
Jerry Ferris. The veteran right-hander also added two strikeouts.
Alex Schuiling and
Ryan Butzer both threw a shutout inning the rest of the way.
The Panthers pull the curtain on the regular-season at Madonna Wednesday and Thursday. First pitch for both games are at 2 p.m.
