Panthers Run Away with Opening Round Victory Over Cougars

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Host Davenport and Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) combined for 26 hits but it was the second-seeded Panthers that claimed a 10-5 win over the No. 3 Cougars in the middle-game of a three-game day one of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Opening Round at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex Tuesday evening.

The Panthers remain in the winner's bracket to meet either No. 1 Oklahoma Wesleyan or No. 5 Grand View (Iowa) Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Cougars, meanwhile, move to the loser's bracket and will open day two with an elimination matchup against Peru State (Neb.) at noon.

Davenport went on to tally 15 hits on the afternoon while Mount Vernon Nazarene collected 11.

Only six of nine Panthers in the lineup had tallied two hits each. Brandon Cable and Ryan Manning were the only ones to record extra-bases with each stretching for a double. Seven Panthers had also each tallied a RBI in the lineup.

Corey Murphy picked up the win despite allowing four unearned runs, three in the fourth and one in the fifth, before turning it over to the bullpen with two down in the sixth.

Efrain Montero led the effort for the Cougars with four hits and RBIs each. In fact, he was one of two to have more have a multi-hit game. Sterling Harpst had two hits and runs scored each.

Although he threw 7 1/3 innings, Lucas Daugherty suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned on a dozen hits and a walk. He did strikeout four.

Davenport got on the board with a two-run first inning but the lead was lost in third when a poor throw to first with two outs allowed the Cougars to bring across two unearned runs. The Panthers regained the lead in the next half-inning by scoring three to take a 5-2 lead. They would eventually never look back the rest of the way.

The Cougars would score two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
