GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Upset city! The Panthers pull off the upset against #5 Northwestern Ohio earlier this afternoon. Davenport beat the Racers 2-1 in a very intense matchup between the two teams. Two defenders would score for the Panthers, both
Cynthia Konan and
Allison Luurtsema would score the goals.
The first half saw some very early success for the Panthers as Konan would score off a corner kick by
Juli Knapp in the fourth minute of the game. Knapp lofted the ball to the near post and there was a scramble of bodies, when all of the sudden the ball was in the net! Konan would take credit for the goal. The rest of the first half saw the Panthers play lots of defense as the Racers would fire 11 shots, four of which were on goal.
The Racers came out just as aggressive in the second half as they were in the first. However, Davenport's defense was up to the task as they would hold off against an extremely efficient offense. The Racers leading scorer, Camilla Andersen, broke the Racers silence as she scored her 15
th goal of the season off a header in the 68
th minute of play. Davenport would take advantage of the few opportunities that were presented to them, as freshmen
Allison Luurtsema would cash in off of a free kick.
Alex Prout fired a long distance ball into the box from about 45 yards out, and Luurtsema would get a head on the ball and see it trickle into the right lower corner of the net. For the next 12 minutes Davenport would play heavy on the defensive side of the ball as the Racers threw everything they had at the Panthers. Time would be on Davenport's side as the clock would run out with the score Davenport 2 and Northwestern Ohio 1.
Goal keeper
Regan Troff had an outstanding game in the net as she tallied nine saves on the night and only let up one goal. This would be a career high for her as she only previously saved 15 shots all year. Davenport creates more history as they now tie the programs record for longest streak without losing a game, the Panthers have gone 13 consecutive games without losing.
