Fourth Quarter Comeback Gives DU 10th Straight Win

Panthers (13-1) held Indiana-East to nine points in the fourth and won 80-78

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 7 Davenport women's basketball team had a fierce fourth quarter comeback on Tuesday in an 80-78 win over No. 21 Indiana-East to give them 10 straight wins and improve to 13-1 overall. The Panthers got a battle from the Red Wolves who entered the game with six straight wins. IUE falls to 10-4 overall but had DU against the ropes after a solid third quarter. Davenport trailed 69-61 heading into the final 10 minutes but buckled down on defense and limited the Red Wolves to 20 percent shooting in the quarter.

IUE led up until the 4:28 mark when Chri Carter converted a layup for a 76-76 tie. It was the first tie since 1:11 left in the second quarter. The game then hit a wall in terms of scoring and both teams could not break the tie. The Red Wolves took the lead 78-76 with a pair of Danielle Wells free throws with 49 seconds left. Senior Courtney Murphy stepped up with her biggest baskets first coming to tie it again with 31 seconds left after a nice assist from Carter. Davenport called timeout to setup the final strategy and some pressure forced a turnover as Mallory Sewell got a steal on the defensive end and Murphy raced downcourt for a layup with 21 seconds to go.

Kristen Miller drove the paint for IU-East to attempt to tie the score but she got too far underneath the hoop and missed a shot that was rebounded by Molly Babbs. With just two team fouls in the quarter, IU-East was forced to foul three more times under 10 seconds. By the time DU went to the free throw line after the fifth foul, there was only 0.9 seconds on the clock. Murphy missed the first and purposely missed the second with IU-East out of timeouts.

The first meeting between the teams proved to be a classic and featured 11 ties and five lead changes. IU-East led for 24:42 but DU led when it mattered the most. The telling stat of the night was that the Red Wolves did not have a field goal for the final 5:47 of the contest. Davenport shot 42.5 percent (34-of-80) including 47.4 percent in the fourth. Carter had a fine game setting new career-highs in field goals (9) and field goal attempts (18). She finished with a team-high 18 points, five assists and four rebounds in 29 minutes. Babbs grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds (all defensive) in 21 minutes. Emily Severn scored 15 points off the bench going 6-of-14 from the floor and was one point shy of her career-high. Davenport shared the ball with 23 assists on 34 field goals and committed just 13 turnovers. Murphy finished with 16 points in 21 minutes for the Panthers.
