GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport wins fourth straight conference game after 83-66 victory over the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech. The Panthers have won their past four conference games by 11 or more points and improve to 9-3 overall on the season. The back court for Davenport in
Nick Gamble and
Javon Haines set the tone tonight and were the teams top two scorers.
The Blue Devils took an 8-7 lead with 16:29 remaining in the first half after a three pointer by Erik Davenport, shortly after the Panthers subbed in
Robbie Bramhill and
Cameron Burns off the bench and made a significant scoring run. Bramhill quickly hit a trey ball to start off the run; which sparked a 17-5 DU run, capped off by another Bramhill three. Both the shots were assisted by
Kevin Rich. Lawrence Tech made a couple small runs, but the Panthers got a solid run to end the half. With the score being 30-20 in DU's favor at the 5:31 mark the Panthers held the Blue Devils score less for the rest of the half. On top of holding Lawrence Tech score less for those five plus minutes the Panthers also scored 11 points to create a 21-point lead heading into half.
Haines and Gamble made their biggest impact during the second half. The Blue Devils were chipping away at the Panthers lead and every time it seemed like the lead was going to fall under double digits Haines or Gamble had a response. During the second half Haines scored 14 points, was 2/3 from three and 6/6 from the free throw line, all while grabbing four rebounds. Gamble had 11 points on 4/8 from the field, grabbed two rebounds, had one assist, one block and one steal.
Over the 40 minutes there was the major contributions from Haines and Gamble, however five other Panthers scored five or more points for Davenport. Burns (5), Bramhill (6),
Dawid Czerniawski (6), Rich (7) and
Thomas Hood with eight points. The team shot 49.2% from the field, 57.1% from three and were 17/22 from the free throw line. Davenport assisted on 18 of the 29 made field goals and caused 15 Lawrence Tech turnovers.
Davenport hosts Concordia University of Ann Arbor on Wednesday and after that the team will go one month without playing their next home game. The Panthers have four road games, at Northwestern Ohio, Lourdes, Saint Xavier and Madonna.
