Maves Shuts Down Lancers in 9-0 Win

PULASKI, Tenn. - Junior pitcher Emily Maves led the Panthers Saturday afternoon in their final game of the Martin Methodist Meltdown. Maves pitched five scoreless innings, allowed one hit and struck out eight batters. The bats came alive to back up the shutdown performance from Maves with nine runs on 10 hits as DU improved to 2-1 on the season with a 9-0 win over the Lancers in five innings.

The offense for DU was consistent all afternoon as they scored two runs in each of their first three at bats and capped their performance with a three-run fourth inning. The Panthers used timely hitting to get their first runs across the plate when Lindsay Tasma came to the plate in the bottom of the first with runners on second and third. Tasma roped a triple to left center field that scored Alyssa Eastman and Carli SanMillan to give DU a 2-0 lead.

This would be a part of an afternoon that saw four extra-base hits from DU and eight different Panthers record a hit. The Panthers would extend their lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Cayley Duddles came to the plate with the bases loaded and knocked a double to center field that cleared the bases and helped seal the DU victory in five innings.

Maves (2-0) locked the Lancers down from the circle by allowing only three base runners and one hit. The Lancers did not see their first base runner until the third and did not manage a hit against Maves until the fifth inning.

Tasma finished her day offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, two RBI, and a run scored. Sarah Schneidenbach went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored from the lead off position and Nicole Vitale had a 1-for-2 day with 2 RBI and run scored. The Panthers saw nine different runners cross the plate to score and five different hitters record an RBI. DU will see its next action in Clermont, Florida on February 27 on their Spring Trip in a game against No. 16 Southeastern University.
