Panthers Earn Split to Open Spring Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Panthers opened up their play in Clermont, Florida on their spring trip Saturday afternoon. DU saw a hard-fought 1-0 loss to No. 16 Southeastern University before they took a commanding 12-4 win over Keiser to put their overall record in 2016 at 3-2.

The first game of the day for the Panthers saw a pitcher's duel that resulted in a 1-0 loss. Emily Maves continued her dominating performance in the circle for the Panthers with a complete game and 11 strikeouts. Maves held the Fire in check all game long as Southeastern managed just 2 hits and one earned run. The Fire was able to take the lead over DU in the 4th inning when a double to left field scored a runner from first base and Southeastern had the 1-0 edge. The Panthers saw their biggest offensive threat in the bottom of the fourth inning when DU looked to respond immediately, but they could not convert with bases loaded and two outs. Sarah Schneidenbach and Alyssa Eastman each went 1-for-3 for the Panthers as the DU offense totaled five hits and left four runners on base.

The bats for the Panthers then came alive in the second game of the day. The Panthers faced Keiser University and overwhelmed the Seahawks with a 13-run, 12-hit performance. DU trailed early in the game as Keiser took a 2-0 lead after three innings on a pair of unearned runs. The Panthers then opened up the game with a 5-run fourth inning and took over the lead for good. Aby Brambila highlighted this big inning for the Panthers with a one out, three-RBI double to right center field that scored Nicole Vitale, Lindsay Tasma, and Alyssa Eastman.

The Seahawks jumped back into the game in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs that cut the Panther lead to 5-4. Keiser threatened to take lead back from DU, but Mallory Teunissen struck out the final two batters of the inning to leave the bases loaded.

The Panthers then sealed their victory in the top of the fifth inning as they scored six more runs. Eastman started the inning off for the Panthers with a towering home run to right field on the first pitch of the inning. This would spark a huge inning for the Panthers that saw five different Panthers earn an RBI with four different players recording a hit. Teunissen (1-0) secured her first career win by settling in as she did not allow the Seahawks to score again. She would take the victory with a complete game and 11 strikeouts. Teunissen only allowed one earned run with Keiser recording nine hits.

Eastman finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Tasma finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Brambila recorded a 2-for-4 day with three RBI and one run scored.
